The terminology used in car accident cases can get pretty confusing sometimes. So we thought we’d take a moment and demystify it for you.

1st party car insurance is, basically, your car insurance. It is the coverage you have purchased for your car.

So, for example, if you are injured in a car accident, before you hire a Seattle car accident lawyer or take any other steps, you should contact your insurance company, the 1st party car insurance company, to let them know what happened, so they can begin to process your claim (get you a rental car, pay medical bills, etc.).

One important thing to note, however. 1st party insurance does not pay for pain and suffering (unless you were not driving your own car). And if you think about it, it makes sense. If it did, then we’d be paying ourselves for our own pain and suffering.
